In the opening match of the 2021/22 Champions League, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United were surprised by the Swiss representative, Young Boys because they had to end the match with a 1-2 defeat on Wednesday (15/9) early morning WIB.
Unable to start the European competition well, Rio Ferdinand admitted that he was furious with the performance of Solskjaer’s team, and he criticized two MU players, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jesse Lingard.
The two players who were mentioned were indeed the culprits for the defeat of the Red Devils. Wan-Bissaka had to be sent off in the 35th minute, for making a dangerous tackle and Lingard making a wrong anticipation that allowed Young Boys to score the winning goal.
Seeing the disappointing performances of the two players, Ferdinand responded that when he had played in a competition like the Champions League, he should not underestimate any opponent and must continue to play at the highest level.
“It’s like feeling defeat against Istanbul Basaksehir. Jesse (Lingard) made a big mistake in this match,” said Ferdinand from the Daily Mail.
“When you play in Europe you should be at your best. It was a bad tackle by Wan-Bissaka that Manchester United’s performance changed completely,” he concluded.
Failing to get full points, makes MU really have to win when undergoing the second match of the Champions League against Villarreal, if you want to continue to open up opportunities to qualify for the round of 16.
