The basic version of the next power unit of the Cavallino can debut in Istanbul: a signal even if the red will pay penalties
It seems strange the relief with which you watch Monza go away in the mirrors. But only for sentimental reasons, from the much more concrete technical point of view it was taken for granted that Ferrari would not miss the 2021 Italian GP. And therefore after the 4th place of Charles Leclerc and the 6th of Carlos Sainz we move forward, we continue the path of a possible redemption but which, the F1 of recent years has taught us all too well, it cannot be immediate.
The reds are missing about 20 horses, as we saw on Sunday in the lost duel with McLarens, and Mattia Binotto confirmed it. This is not a surplus that can pop out as if by magic. It goes step by step. The first of which will be the new specification of the hybrid part of the power unit. Traditionally, such developments arrived in Monza, to sanctify the home grand prix. “It will come soon”, assured Binotto. “It is in our interest that it be as soon as possible because we will need it in the work we are doing for next year”. As proof that the duel for third place in the Constructors with McLaren is interesting, yes, but it is certainly not the priority. He will fight to the end, of course, for the prestige, for the 5 million more prize that the third place entails compared to the fourth, and because the direct opponent is the counterpart team of the oldest, consolidated and grim rivalry of the F. 1. And it is therefore logical that no one wants to give up even a millimeter. But the third place will be really important only in terms of how and how much it can represent an advantage in the works, in the developments and in the technologies for 2022, when we will restart with new rules and new cars.
This is why Ferrari is eager to have the new specification. Which he will then pay with a penalty, with starts from the back of the grid. And therefore this could also be assessed in relation to the GP in which to introduce it: that there will be a price to pay and where it will be less expensive to pay it. In the Maranello programs, this should take place in October, presumably from the Turkish GP, at the latest in Austin. Hurry, because, as explained by Binotto, its introduction will facilitate solutions for next year’s new Ferrari. “Which – said the team principal himself at Monza – is progressing, we are in the moment in which the geometry of the frame and the entire concept of the car, the suspension schemes, those of the cooling freeze. We are at an advanced stage, the chassis. it is already in production. And the engine will be new in terms of concept and design. ” In the hope that it also has the power to make up the deficit compared to those of Mercedes and Honda. “The goal is that”. And this is why the work on the 2021 specification is important, because in addition to introducing an increase in power, it should give fundamental indications on the reliability of the 2022 power unit.
In the meantime, we need to think about Sochi, where we will be racing in two weeks, a track with long straights, therefore not entirely in favor of Ferraris, but also with an important part driven that should reassure it compared to Monza (where in the 2nd sector it did not lose than the best). Then you will live from race to race in this up and down with the McLaren which has certainly been much more fluctuating than the red one so far.
And finally, in the days of Monza there were those who spoke of an imminent relaunch of Leclerc, of the possible extension of an already unusually long contract that binds him to Maranello until 2024. A move forward, to 2026, has been hypothesized. There is no doubt that Charles in Ferrari is well and that he feels invested in the role of man of destiny. He knows that the redemption that everyone is working for will be he who must finalize it. And then for a driver of his class and his worth, there would not be many plausible alternative destinations. There are few, three to one eye, and all with the first driver’s position contracted out. The upcoming F1 looks to be with four clear-cut identifications: Verstappen-Red Bull, Russell-Mercedes, Norris-McLaren and Leclerc-Ferrari. Then history teaches us that anything could happen, starting with some sensational exchange. Everything will depend on what has been said so far. From the progress, most of all from the car that Maranello will put on track starting next year.
