Owen Wijndal is the new captain of AZ. The 21-year-old defender takes over the band from Teun Koopmeiners, who continues his career at the Italian club Atalanta. International Wijndal, just back from an injury, comes from the youth academy of AZ.
“Owen is available against PSV. Will he also become captain? Yes, Owen is the new captain for this season,” said trainer Pascal Jansen to leader PSV before the top match. The game will be played on Saturday evening and starts at 9 p.m.
PSV is the only club in the Eredivisie that has not yet suffered a loss of points. “PSV is certainly a strong opponent. They are doing well and have also played a number of good matches in the European qualification. We have also looked back with great interest,” said Jansen, who worked in Eindhoven in the past. “We are really looking forward to it, also because we have shown in recent years that we are a formidable opponent for PSV.” AZ won the last four matches with PSV.
For AZ, it will only be the first home game of the season in the Eredivisie. A scheduled home game was moved to give AZ the opportunity to prepare as best as possible for the meeting with Celtic in the preliminary rounds of the Europa League.
“When I hear what is going to happen before the game, it will certainly be a party. It is nice to welcome the supporters again. But I focus on the game,” said Jansen. The AZ stadium has undergone a major metamorphosis after part of the roof collapsed in a major storm two years ago.
AZ is on 3 points after a defeat against RKC (1-0) and a win against sc Heerenveen (1-3).
