The new 8 Gbps plan offers one of the fastest data speeds for Dutch consumers. Competitors VodafoneZiggo and KPN offer a maximum of 1 Gbps (gigabit). Delta is also slashing the price of its gigabit plans. Every customer with a 400 Mbps subscription will switch to 1 Gbps. “Gigabit is becoming the new standard. The demand for bandwidth in a household is increasing enormously,” says Delta-CCO Ludolf Rasterhoff.
Upgrade fiber optic network
The higher data rates are possible because Delta is rolling out the fiber-optic technology XGS-PON, which can transfer speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second. “After a pilot in Kapelle, a broad roll-out of XGS-PON is now underway, throughout the Netherlands,” the provider said.
The first areas are Het Hogeland in Groningen, Drechterland-Noord in North Holland and Alphen, Chaam and Riel in North Brabant. In those places, the 8 Gbps subscription can be ordered for new customers.
For current Delta customers, the faster plan will be available next year, as the provider will upgrade its existing fiber network. Customers with the new subscription will receive a modem with a total capacity of 8 Gbps, spread over several streams. At the end of 2022, a modem will follow that also transmits 8 Gbps via one LAN port.
Competition for fiberglass
Currently, half of Dutch households have a fiber optic connection. Last week, Delta announced that it would connect 2 million homes and businesses to fiber. This mainly concerns ‘larger villages and small towns’.
KPN is also investing heavily in expanding its fiber optic network. The company aims to offer fiber to two-thirds of Dutch households by 2025. The company has also raised money from ABP pension fund to accelerate the connection of 750,000 households and 225,000 companies in the coming years, especially in smaller villages.
In addition, T-Mobile is also active in the fiber optic market: that party rents a fiber optic network and invests 700 million euros in it over the next five years.
VodafoneZiggo mainly focuses on improving its cable network by offering gigabit internet in more and more places. But VodafoneZiggo will also offer fiber optic to the meter cupboard at some locations. This already happened recently in Rotterdam, later this year also in The Hague and Arnhem.
