The Dutch water polo players have not been able to grace their return to the Olympic Games with a victory. The team of national coach Arno Havenga gave up a large lead in the Tatsumi bath against Australia, the number 3 of the last World Cup, and lost 15-12 (3-3 2-5 5-2 5-2).
Sabrina van der Sloot, Maud Megens, Ilse Koolhaas and Simone van de Kraats all scored twice, the other hits came from Iris Wolves, Nomi Stomphorst, Kitty Lynn Joustra and Maartje Keuning.
The water polosters won Olympic gold at the Beijing 2008 Games, but they failed to qualify for London 2012 and Rio 2016. The Havenga team also struggled to make it to Tokyo. Only at the last qualifying tournament, at the beginning of this year in the Italian city of Trieste, we managed to get a ticket.
