A speedboat belonging to a film crew lay in front of the jetty from which the male swimmers jumped.
When the starting signal was given and the swimmers dived into the water, the boat made a quick swing back to prevent swimmers from getting caught in the boat’s propellers.
Luckily no one was injured, but the swimmers who had already left didn’t all realize it was a false start.
Organizers tried to signal to them on jet skis and with alarms that the race had to be restarted. That worked about two hundred meters away.
The game finally started ten minutes later. No Dutch participated in the triathlon, which consists of a 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike ride and 10 kilometer run.
Never before has there been such a false start at an Olympic triathlon. “Extremely remarkable,” commentators said of the incident.
Norwegian Kristian Blummenfelt won the triathlon.
