A couple of days ago we told you that one of the Valve members who worked on the Steam Deck assured that the goal is for it to be able to run games at 800p and 30 fps. For many, that comment meant that games would only run at that frame-per-second rate, but it is now clear what those words meant.
Through Twitter, Pierre-Loup Griffais, Valve member who made the original comments, took the opportunity to clarify his words. According to him, when he mentioned that the goal of the Steam Deck is to run games at 30 fps, he meant that it is the minimum performance they expect, not the maximum.
What do you mean by this? That, when designing the hardware, they did so to deliver this performance as the minimum acceptable. That said, the reality is that in their tests the games consistently achieved this performance and even surpassed it.
“The 30fps target refers to the minimum we consider playable in our performance tests; games that we have consistently tested and shown meet and exceed this bar thus far, ”he explained.
In case you missed it: Valve explains why Steam Deck and Switch are very different systems
The “30 FPS target” refers to the floor of what we consider playable in our performance testing; games we’ve tested and shown have consistently met and exceeded that bar so far. There will also be an optional built-in FPS limiter to fine-tune perf vs. battery life.

Another important point is that the Steam Deck will have an internal FPS limiter. The point of this is that you can find the balance you want between performance and battery life. With this, the Steam Deck proves that it is a PC by letting you have an experience to your liking.
Bottom line: the Steam Deck is capable of running games at 60 frames per second. That said, Valve believes that the minimum acceptable for your hardware is to run them at 30 frames per second. In addition, you can modify different graphic options to play at a higher or lower resolution, with greater visual details and more.
