Darter Peter Wright has won the World Matchplay title for the first time in his career. The second seed Scots defeated title holder Dimitri Van den Bergh from Belgium in Blackpool with clear figures: 18-9.
Wright averaged 105.90 points in the final. The dethroned Van den Bergh came in at 100.88. Wright (51) earned around 165,000 euros with his triumph in Winter Gardens. Van den Bergh (27) was left with about 80,000 euros from his second place in the final in a row.
Wright also knocked out two-time winner Michael van Gerwen in the semi-finals in a grand way. The 2020 world champion triumphed on Saturday 17-10 and finished in that match with an impressive average of 110.37 points.
The World Matchplay forms the ‘Triple Crown’ in darts with the World Cup and the Premier League.
