Djokovic has already won the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year. His big goal is to achieve a ‘Golden Slam’, which means winning all four grand slam tournaments in the same year and the overall victory in the singles at the Olympic Games. Earlier this month, Djokovic tied his twentieth grand slam title at Wimbledon with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Djokovic, 34, hopes to single-handedly lead the list of most grand slam titles at the US Open.
“It would have been great to have Novak here,” said Karl Hale, tournament director in Toronto, where tennis will be played from August 9-15. “But we understand his decision. We wish him all the best for the rest of the season.”
The US Open kicks off on August 30.
