A 40-year-old man from Nieuwleusen (Overijssel) is sentenced to twelve years in prison for killing his baby. The court in Zwolle determined this on Thursday. The four-month-old girl died last year as a result of serious skull and brain injuries.
The court finds it very heavy on the man that he did not offer his “young, defenseless daughter the safety and security” she needed. The judge is also of the opinion that when someone applies such ‘brutal violence to a very young and vulnerable child, it cannot be otherwise than that he knowingly had the intention – and therefore intent – to take her life’. The court acquitted the mother of negligence.
Because the man has not disclosed anything, it is unclear what exactly happened on the night of March 9, 2020. It is clear that he was the only one around when the baby was injured. After inflicting the injury, the man would no longer have cared about his daughter, the court says. Only later that night, when the mother of the baby came home and saw the broken face and the large bump on the head, the GP was called.
