Without detracting from the great riders who raced in MotoGP with the Ducati team, in the Superbike world championship the Borgo Panigale company had among its ranks a motorcycle legend among the most popular in the history of motorcycling. Not so much for the brilliant results, but for the love it generated among the fans. This is Troy Bayliss, an Australian who really gave his best in the WSBK in a sensational period for the championship, when he was able to generate considerable interest unlike today, especially in terms of media coverage.
Well, Ducati has produced a tribute bike to celebrate Troy Bayliss’s career. This is the Panigale V2 Bayliss 1st Championship 20th Anniversary, motorcycle with special livery that bears the signature of the Australian champion. In fact, the livery recalls that of the Ducati 996 R of the first Superbike world title won by Bayliss in 2001. Number 21 has double meaning: it was used in 2001 by Bayliss on the track, but it also recalls the current year; for a very nice game of coincidences, it is also exactly 20 years after the conquest of that first WSBK World Championship. In short, the anniversary is more than justified by the figures! Ducati and Bayliss together collected 52 victories, 94 podiums and three world titles (2001, 2006 and 2008) won with three different bikes: the twin-cylinder 996 R, 999 R and 1098 R. Troy Bayliss was the only motorcyclist in history capable of winning in MotoGP and WorldSBK in the same season (2006) and his achievements in the race have indelibly imprinted the Australian’s name in the hearts of all Ducati fans.
Troy’s autograph is reproduced on the tank of the celebratory bike, while the name of the bike and the progressive numbering of this unique model are shown on the aluminum steering plate machined from solid. Ducati has also chosen to equip the special Panigale V2 with Öhlins components. The NX30 fork and the TTX36 rear shock absorber are the two elements that distinguish the ride quality, in particular the customizable shock absorber. Compared to the standard version, the Panigale V2 Bayliss 1st Championship 20th Anniversary is also 3 kilos lighter, thanks to the adoption of the lithium-ion battery and the choice of the single-seater configuration (while considering that the passenger seat and footpegs are available in the equipment supplied).
EICMA 2021, Suzuki showcases the future range
“The equipment is completed by the sports grips, the muffler end cover in carbon fiber and titanium and the rider seat made by combining two different technical materials with double red stitching. The number 21 of Troy is embroidered on the saddle in white flanked by two vertical bands of green and red to make up the Italian flag. The bike is also equipped with self-bleeding brake and clutch pumps with smoked oil tanks“, Communicates Ducati. The power remains the same: 155 hp at 10,750 rpm, as well as the maximum torque, 104 Nm at 9,000 rpm. The Panigale V2 Bayliss 1st Championship 20th Anniversary will be available in Ducati network dealerships starting from the end of September 2021 at a price of € 20,990. ex-dealer (price referred to the Italian market).
