In a WhatsApp group that has more than 100 participants, Alex Pinheiro Machado Rodrigues, aged 50, is the bridge between those in need and those who have to donate. The systems analyst decided to share his vocation for volunteering with the neighbors of the condominium where he lives, in Jardim Botânico, in Brasília, and make a difference in this difficult period of pandemic.
Rodrigues promotes donations of all types of articles for vulnerable communities. In specific cases, cows and fundraising campaigns that involve the community are created. The actions take place throughout the year and, instead of decreasing during isolation, they ended up increasing.
The Doar Faz Bem Solar project was born in 2018, but has intensified its activities in the last year in view of so many needs that arose with the health crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Alex’s group has collected 150 food baskets, hundreds of shoes, food, blankets, clothing, furniture and other items useful to them. In addition, they have already donated around 3 tons of food so far.
“I had been doing social work for many years and I realized that our neighbors were willing to help. Thus, I started to help with the logistics of receiving/seeking donations, sorting and distributing. My house serves as a “warehouse” for donations and, thank God it’s never empty,” explains Alex.
The distribution of donations is made, most of the time, by Alex himself to communities that he perceives that they are in need. “And also at the suggestion of residents. I prefer to deliver in person, to ensure that they are in fact in need, and to be able to report to friends who donated. In the group, we always receive indications and requests for help to meet specific needs,” he says.
Isolation, according to him, helped in the collection and organization of donations. “Without being able to leave the house, many people had more time to remove clothes, shoes and other items that could be used for other people. Because of the pandemic, informal work dropped a lot and, more than ever, those in need became even more in need “, explains the coordinator.
Alex is responsible for collecting and collecting donations in the condominium where he lives and take them to the place. Those who are part of risk groups and cannot expose themselves, the coordinator finds a way to securely seek and deliver donations. The analyst believes that the demand for aid has only grown, many people have lost their occupations.
“The more we help, the more people come up wanting to help, which is wonderful. I think that in the pandemic people started to look more inward, a moment of reflection, and were more willing to review the usefulness of items that were not or were not used and that they could have a nobler destination, to the next”, says Alex, who dreams of expanding even more “Doar does Bem Solar”.
“I want to be able to help in other areas, not only the donation of items, but also the donation of knowledge, self-esteem, so that, increasingly, these people need less assistance. Training, information, training, something in this sense and especially that they can be multipliers of this idea”, completes Alex.
