Atari is a company that is in a difficult state. After planning a console and wanting to enter the world of cryptocurrencies, now the company has let its plans shake. This by stopping doing free-to-play for mobile to better focus on delivering premium experiences for PC and consoles.
According to information from GamesIndustry.bizAs part of its restructuring last April – which divided the company into Atari Gaming and Atari Blockchain – it decided to create a new strategy. With it, Atari Gaming will stop concentrating solely on retro games through mobile phones, to also deliver premium experiences on all platforms.
According to Atari, the plan is to build “a strong lineup of premium games” of which the first will debut before April 2022. With this plan they want to return to the roots of Atari and adapt them to a modern context.
“Our intent with any gaming experience is to deliver meaningful gaming moments that are accessible and joyful,” explained Wade J Rosen, CEO of Atari. “That is the core of Atari and what ties our history to our future. To that end, we feel that premium gaming is a better representative of this kind of experience and of Atari’s DNA. “
It is important to note that, according to the Atari executive, some of its mobile and free-to-play projects have been successful, so they will remain active. That said, those who have not enjoyed the same success (including Roller Coaster Tycoon Stories, Crystal Castles, Castles & Catapults, Ninja Golf Y Atari Combat: Tank Fury) will cease to operate or will be sold to other companies.
And you, what do you think about this change in strategy? Do you think Atari can succeed in the world of AAA games?
