The Mercedes driver at the press conference ahead of the second round in a row at the Red Bull Ring: “We are working on the car both in the short and long term, it will be another difficult race”
Second in the Formula 1 World Championship and second at the finish in the Styrian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton had not been in such a situation for several years. And the Austrian Grand Prix (it takes place on Sunday 4 July, here the TV times), barring unforeseen events, it seems unable to change the cards at stake, with a Max Verstappen determined to bring his Red Bull back to the top step of the podium, thanks to an excellent race pace and those two or three tenths on the flying lap that allow him to always have the road free in the race. The only differences with the first weekend in Austria concern the tires, with Pirelli carrying the C3, C4 and C5 configurations, with the latter corresponding to the old hypersoft.
Hamilton: “closing the gap”
Lewis Hamilton at the press conference: “We are working on the car to be competitive both in the short and long term, the approach to the weekend is as positive as ever, we are focused on doing a good job. All the technicians are working and at the same time understanding the car more. Red Bull have been impressive in the last four races, while Monaco and Baku have been two disastrous GPs for us. We hope to be able to bridge the gap, that’s why we are here. We have to be faster in the race pace to stay with Max. But we don’t have to have a negative view of things, at Mercedes we have the best engineers possible and we are all working in the same direction to get the most out of it. It will not be an easy race, but we arrive better prepared and with more information ”.
During free practice Pirelli will make stiffer rear tires available to the riders: “I don’t expect big changes – admits Hamilton. The times that the tire company has brought new solutions to try, we have not found any noticeable differences ”. Finally, the Mercedes driver closes with a message to the British people in view of the Silverstone round, which will take place from 16 to 18 July: “Be careful and continue to wear masks. For me it will be a great thrill to see the home crowd again, it will certainly be a more colorful and fun GP than last year “.
