The already difficult diplomatic relations between Russia and the US are further jeopardized by the words of Vladimir Putin.
The Russian president has in fact put pen to paper a very heavy accusation, claiming that in 2014 the US would have orchestrated a coup in Ukraine, forcing the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovich to leave office.
Putin wrote this in an article for the German newspaper “The time”, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the invasion of the Soviet Union by Germany.
After his deposition, in February 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, supporting separatists who wanted to break away from Ukraine. In a climate worthy of Cold War, Putin writes, the “Ukrainian tragedy” has occurred.
“Why did the United States organize a coup d’état and why did the European states weakly support it, causing a rift in Ukraine and the separation of Crimea? Now the whole European security system is seriously damaged. Tensions are growing and the risks of a new arms race are becoming real, ”Putin added.
