A month before the start of the Olympic Games, the corona virus was first diagnosed in one of the participating athletes. An athlete from Uganda tested positive on arrival at Tokyo airport and was prevented from entering Japan.
The other eight members of the Ugandan sports team traveled by bus to their host city of Izumisano, near Osaka. The athletes from Uganda will participate in boxing, weightlifting and swimming at the Games next month.
Uganda’s delegation is the second group of Olympic athletes to arrive in Tokyo. The women’s softball team of Australia already arrived in Japan earlier.
The unnamed athlete from Uganda, like his teammates, had been vaccinated and submitted a negative test report within 72 hours of leaving for Japan, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported. According to the International Olympic Committee, 80 percent of the participating athletes were vaccinated at the start of the Games on July 23.
