The General Assembly of the HIM-HER-IT approved a new mandate of the squeeze Portuguese minister António Guterres at the head of the organization for the period 2022-2026.
In office since 2017, Guterres He was sworn in with a promise to act independently of member states or organizations, during a ceremony attended by the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
“Our greatest challenge, which is at the same time our greatest opportunity, is to use this crisis to turn the tide towards a world that learns lessons, promotes a just, green and sustainable recovery, and shows the way to effective international cooperation to address problems. global, “Guterres said.
“This step will be a real effort to strengthen what works and have the courage to learn the lessons of what does not work,” he added.
The former Portuguese prime minister was the only candidate for the new term. Another 10 figures sought the position but their candidacies were not formalized as they did not have the support of any of the 193 countries that make up the UN.

During his first term, Guterres was forced to focus on limiting the potential damage of the unilateral and estranged foreign policy promoted by former US President Donald Trump.
Regarding the pandemic, Guterres warned against the ravages of the coronavirus and the dangers that threaten the world due to the health crisis, although he had little room for maneuver, since countries chose to fight individual battles against Covid-19 in detriment of a collective effort.
Likewise, Guterres made the fight against global warming one of his priorities, but in this regard he did not achieve much either.
