Jokes that exploit the ambivalence of the word “party” to describe the climate in certain subtitles have been in vogue a year and three months before the 2022 presidential election. Acronyms from right to left are in a phase of multiplication of pre-candidacies and opposition from wards.
In the most recent episode, Novo announced the launch of João Amoêdo, who ran for Planalto in 2018, as the one chosen to enter the dispute, but a group of affiliates disagreed and tried to get federal deputy Tiago Mitraud (MG) in, revealing internal differences .
At the PSOL, federal deputy Glauber Braga (RJ) presented his pre-candidacy with the support of co-religionists to oppose the current that discards the party’s own candidate in 2022 and defends support for former president Lula, who is on his way to be the candidate of PT.
At a more advanced stage, the split in the PSDB — an even hit expression in the political news — will be resolved with preliminary, the details of which began to be defined this week. In the current situation, the governor of São Paulo, João Doria, who has been looking for the presidency for years, has three opponents.
Present, to a greater or lesser degree, in the surroundings of practically all candidates for the position, the partisan split only does not affect the candidate for reelection. And for an obvious reason: Bolsonaro remains without party affiliation, although he has signaled his entry into Patriota.
In the case of Novo, a ward rebelled against the announcement, made on the 1st, that Amoêdo had accepted the invitation made by 36 of the 40 members of the national convention to be a pre-candidate. The entrepreneur and founder of the party had more than 2.6 million votes and was in fifth place.
Amoêdo, who declared his vote for Bolsonaro in the second round, but now says he is sorry (opposes the government and defends impeachment), was harassed by federal parliamentarians of the acronym, considered aligned with the president and interested in not breaking with the Bolsonarist electorate.
The riot led to an internal stalemate, exposed on social networks and internal messages leaked to the press. Mitraud, who declared that he had no intention of running, but also did not oppose the articulation, would need at least 21 signatures in support of his name, which he did not.
The matter was discussed in recent days in summit meetings of the Novo, which, sought, did not manifest. In 2020, a split in the party culminated in the revocation of Filipe Sabará’s candidacy for mayor of São Paulo, after he praised Bolsonaro and suspected irregularities.
“When I received the invitation, my understanding was that it would be to be the pre-candidate, not to participate in the selection process with other names”, says Amoêdo. “What I understand is that now they [dirigentes] are looking at steps to formalize the closing of the selection process.”
Involved in the fabrication of a third way, he claims to have “no fixation for being a candidate”, but argues that the party should have a representative to sit at the negotiating table. “The noise is greater at the start. And this is normal especially in an environment as confusing as the one we live under Bolsonaro,” he says.
Mitraud affirms that the pre-candidacy proposal stagnated in the absence of sufficient support and denies the slur of pocketnarista attributed to the bench. One of the readings is that deputies would be afraid of losing votes from the president’s support base in his reelection attempts in 2022.
“I think the Novo has presented itself as an option that continues to represent the desire of part of the population that voted for Bolsonaro in 2018 [em relação à agenda liberal], but without being Bolsonaro, without dragging all those problems that he symbolizes”, says the miner.
The environment is also split in PSOL. Braga and the group of lawmakers who endorsed the launch of his pre-candidacy in May distanced themselves from the core of former presidential candidate Guilherme Boulos, who is an exponent of the majority wing and enthusiastic about negotiating an alliance with Lula.
The leader of the MTST (Movement of Homeless Workers), who is a pre-candidate for governor of São Paulo, defends the union of the left at the national and local levels.
The dissidents’ fight is for the PSOL to refuse the approach of center-right forces that are being sought by the PT. They also preach that, as it has done since its founding in 2004, the party will present a face to the presidential election, with a project that is faithful to the principles of the left.
“Support for our pre-candidacy is only increasing,” says Braga. He even has federal deputy Luiza Erundina (SP) at his side, who was deputy on Boulos’ ticket for the São Paulo City Hall in 2020.
“If the other leftist parties have a candidacy with a leftist program, our pre-candidacy loses strength, which leads us to open a dialogue”, analyzes the deputy. “But if it is a candidacy to conquer sectors of the right, then our own candidacy thesis will be strengthened.”
Officially, the PSOL will only debate the electoral path at its general congress, scheduled for September. Boulos declined to comment on the confrontation scenario, but he has denied that his position is one of automatic adherence to Lula. For him, everything will depend on the type of deal that is at stake.
In line with Boulos, the national president of the PSOL, Juliano Medeiros, affirms that `the orientation approved by the acronym’s directory is towards “building the unity of the left”.
“This does not necessarily mean that the PSOL will form an alliance. This issue will be debated democratically in the national congress, considering the framework as a whole and the situation of the left parties”, says the leader, who has been discreet so as not to further incite even more the moods.
In the tucanato, which lives something close to a plebiscite to ratify or not Doria’s pre-candidacy, the division is something historical. The previews, in November, should also include Governor Eduardo Leite (RS), Senator Tasso Jereissati (CE) and former Manaus Mayor Arthur Virgílio (AM).
“A party is for that, to have a dispute. Up ahead, we find a convergence. This is how democracy is established”, says the national president of the PSDB, Bruno Araújo. “We are not ‘united’, we are ‘party'”, he jokes.
For the leader, the internal debates will strengthen the base of the acronym and will have no interference in the effort to break the Bolsonaro-Lula dichotomy, which involves associations such as the PSDB, the DEM and the Novo. “To reach understanding, we need someone who personifies the party”, says Araújo.
The DEM, which works under the name of former Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta, is also seeking a solution to unify the party, which imploded after the election for the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies and has been losing important cadres amid clashes of chiefs.
“At the right time, the pre-candidacy will be made official, in an organized manner. It doesn’t have to be now,” says Mandetta. “All parties have their peculiarities and complexities. It’s natural that there are people with different views, but this gets better and clearer.”
Another name of the DEM, the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (MG), is also mentioned in the presidential candidates’ lists, but as a project of the national president of the PSD, Gilberto Kassab, who would like to see the senator vying for the seat for his caption. Pacheco, so far, rejects the hypothesis.
In the case of the PDT, which is in the presidential race with Ciro Gomes’ pre-campaign, the fracture so far has not been in the form of launching another pre-candidacy, but in the disagreement with the former minister’s strategy of attacking Lula to wave to the audience farthest to the right.
In an interview with leaf, federal deputy Túlio Gadêlha (PDT-PE) said that the target should be the current representative, rather than the PT. “Cyrus will not win the votes of [eleitores de] Bolsonaro. He can win the votes of the undecided 40%, and for that he doesn’t need to attack Lula.”
Ciro likes to say that his candidacy is an issue pacified in the PDT. For the national president of the party, Carlos Lupi, the complaints about the position against Lula are isolated. “It’s everyone’s right to question. But Ciro makes substantive criticism, points out programmatic differences and points out mistakes”, he says.
