After a few months of leaks and rumors, Sony yesterday officially announced its latest flagship true wireless earbuds, the new earbuds WF-1000XM4 at Sony. The new headphones will be available in black or light gray, both with gold accents and, in Italy, are already available su Amazon.
These are the sequel to the earphones WF-1000XM3 model that Sony launched in 2019, and just like the previous model, Sony’s WF-1000XM4s are targeted exactly to the premium range thriving true wireless market, with an all new feature set.
Given that market, Sony’s WF-1000XM4s will be expensive: the earphones are in fact available at a price of € 280 and that puts them in line with competitors like earphones Bose QuietComfort from € 279 and Apple AirPods Pro from € 279, but above other premium noise-canceling earbuds like the Jabra Elite 85t from €230.
New design for Sony’s WF-1000XM4
Featuring a completely renewed design which takes the form of a more compact body, abandoning the elongated style of the XM3 and glossy touch control panels for a more rounded design.
Sony’s new headsets, according to the company, will provide one more comfortable fit compared to the previous model, also thanks to the dimensions that are the 10% smaller than the XM3, not to mention the better weight distribution which made the earbuds more stable.
This stability is aided by foam pads included By default with Sony’s WF-1000XM4s, these are soft but sit comfortably in the ear canal and create a remarkably tight seal.
A further change, even more incisive, was seen with the charging case, which according to Sony it is 40% smaller than that of the XM3, which can also be seen from the photo above.
These new sizes shouldn’t have much trouble fitting into most pockets, backpacks or handbags, plus the case itself, in addition to charging via a USB-C socket, now also supports ricarica wireless Qi.
Sony claims it will deliver 16 hours of battery through the case, and that a five-minute charge can give you about an hour of playback time.
In general, Sony evaluates the battery life of the XM4 a eight hours per charge with active noise cancellation e 12 hours per charge without, which is up from the XM3’s six and eight hour ratings, respectively.
If true, this would be an impressive figure for TWS noise-canceling earbuds in this form factor but, as usual, the exact battery life will depend on how much you use them and how the volume level is adjusted, though. if it were true yes it could reach a total duration of 24 hours or more.
New features and updated specifications
Sony’s main selling point for these earphones is still there active noise cancellation (ANC).
The company has equipped the WF-1000XM4 with a new chip dubbed “Integrated processor V1Which, combined with hardware enhancements and a pair of “noise sensing” microphones on each earbud, are said to improve noise canceling performance across all frequencies.
As I just mentioned, Sony’s WF-1000XM4s come with two microphones, one for feed-forward and one for feedback, with tecnologia Dual Noise Sensor integrated. Located on the surface of the headphones, they capture and analyze surrounding ambient sounds to eliminate noise with extreme precision.
To make you understand even better how much Sony has focused on ANC, know that the driver of Sony’s WF-1000XM4 has been further improved, we will have to deal with a newly developed 6mm driver, with a 20% larger magnet which, together with the super adaptable diaphragm, optimizes low frequency reproduction and noise suppression by generating a high-precision signal.
Other noteworthy additions featured on Sony’s WF-1000XM4 are:
- the system Wind Noise Reduction automatic that detects the presence of wind and eliminates annoying rustles, for total involvement in any environmental condition;
- the function “Speak-to-Chat“Which allows you to interact in short conversations without removing the earphones, in fact as soon as it detects the voice of the wearer, it automatically pauses the music and lets the external sounds pass, to allow you to communicate with the utmost convenience, even when you want keep the headphones in place or your hands are full.
- the mode “Quick Attention”, Which allows you to listen to an announcement or quickly interact with other people simply by placing your finger on the left earpiece, to instantly reduce the volume and let external sounds pass.
The last two functions, however, are very reminiscent of theHearThrough of Jabra, which in my opinion, to date, is one of the best existing systems on TWS headsets –If not the best ever–.
The new model also boasts the intelligent adaptive sound control function, which detects your location and ongoing activity, such as traveling, walking or stationary, by adjusting ambient sound settings to ensure ideal performance.
On setting, the function learns to recognize the places you go to most often, such as your favorite office, gym or bar, and customize the sound according to the situation.
Sony’s WF-1000XM4s are also equipped with automatic pause and play for an optimal experience and, thanks to a sensor that detects whether one or both earphones are worn, the music stops as soon as they are removed and then restarts when you put them back.
Sony has also solved one of the biggest problems of the XM3: these new earphones will in fact have one IPX classification, in this case IPX4, for water and sweat resistance.
Sony’s WF-1000XM4s also have an upgraded voice call system that uses both beamforming microphones and bone conduction sensors to improve performance, however here is one of the flaws that particularly disappointed me: there is still no support for multiple Bluetooth connections or the ability to switch between multiple playback devices.
