The head of the Ministry of Public Function (SFP), Irma Eréndira Sandoval BallesterosHe assured that in the fight against corruption, “Mexico is bearing fruit.”
When participating in the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly against Corruption (UNGASS 2021), Sandoval highlighted that the fight against corruption is achieved “barely two years after a different government”, that of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“In 2019, Mexico made a historic leap in public trust, with the proportion of Mexicans who positively value our strategies to combat corruption from 24% to 61%. Mexico also managed to reduce its indicators of corruption in its services and administrative procedures, going from 51 percent of citizens who experienced bribes in 2017 to 24 percent in 2019, ”he pointed out.
In the virtual forum, coordinated from the headquarters of the HIM-HER-IT in New York, the head of the SFP added that so far in the federal administration, Mexico also advanced 14 positions in the improvement of the global index of perception of corruption, carried out by Transparency International.

“This contrasts with the frank drop of 6 points and 33 places registered in that same indicator, between 2012 and 2018,” he indicated.
Irma Eréndira Sandoval indicated that in the Government of Mexico a new conceptualization of the phenomenon of corruption has been built, which is no longer seen as a cultural or strictly bureaucratic or administrative matter.
“For us it is a political phenomenon, which feeds on the abuse of power, impunity, and the lack of citizen voice in public affairs,” he said.
He reiterated that for the López Obrador government, “the only way to achieve political transformation is by eradicating corruption.”
He listed a series of actions carried out to put an end to this problem, among them, the total transparency of the patrimonial declarations; the elimination of the presidential jurisdiction; consolidated and monitored tenders; the approval of the Federal Republican Austerity Law, as well as the relaunch of the career civil service with a gender perspective.
He also highlighted the creation of the Program for the Protection and Sponsorship of Internal Corruption Alerters; the elimination of secret budget items, as well as funds and trusts that were not accountable; the implementation of the business integrity standard; punishment of those who incur conflicts of interest, in addition to the disqualification of bidders and contractors who abuse the public interest.
“We are not raising bells and whistles, we recognize that the problem of corruption must be fought at the international level, and we are submitting to the best international practices,” he said.

Sandoval Ballesteros pledged to redouble efforts to prevent and punish corruption, particularly in those areas of greatest risk, such as health contracting in the face of the Covid-19 emergency.
“Here I highlight that in our country we have also given a very close audit exercise to the public contracting processes for medical supplies and the procurement of vaccines. We have thus ensured expansive democratic transparency and an honest exercise of our public resources, ”he said.
