The Organization of American States (OEA) accepted the invitation of the National Electoral Institute (INE) to carry out electoral observation activities, as accredited foreign visitors, during the Federal and Concurrent Electoral Process 2020-2021.
The INE explained that the OAS mission, headed by Argentine lawyer Santiago Canton, will present reports with findings and recommendations, with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of the Mexican electoral system.
This same Monday, the mission’s observation tasks began, which met with the President of the Institute, Lorenzo Córdova Vianello.
In this meeting, the objectives to be developed by the mission were presented, as well as the main features of the electoral process in progress.

Santiago Canton reported that the mission will arrive in the country in a staggered manner from the last week of May and will seek to meet virtually with different actors in the process: representatives of the political parties, the media, opinion leaders, academics, local electoral authorities, as well as technicians and officials of the INE.
This is the fifth observation mission deployed by the OAS during electoral processes in Mexico, since previously the organization sent delegations of observers in 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2018.
