Behind the threat of the creation of a Super League among the most prestigious clubs of the Old Continent, in 1999 Uefa decided – during the current season – to expand the maximum number of participants of the same federation for the most important footballing countries to 4. Said, done, immediately on the first lap of the final at the Stade de France in Paris there are two Spaniards: the Real Madrid of Vicente del Bosque and the Valencia of Héctor Cuper, respectively second and fourth of the previous Liga. A Spanish domination, considering that Valencia also eliminates Barcelona in the semifinals. The first final between compatriots is refereed by the Italian Stefano Braschi and is a domain of the Blancos, thanks to the greater experience and the absence of the suspended Amedeo Carboni. In goal for the boys of the capital there is already an Iker Casillas just 19 years old, Fernando Morientes, Steven McManaman and Raul go in goal.
