The Italian spiker, born with damage to her left arm due to a problem during childbirth, ready for the Olympic trip with the national team
Obstetric paralysis means loss of mobility and strength of the arm – in this case the accident – occurred in circumstances related to childbirth. Certainly, however, Flavia Barigelli has not lost that desire inside that makes you go further. Along the journey of his life, a dream stage is about to arrive: it is called Tokyo. “With the national team the most important goal is certainly that of the Paralympics: we will do our best to finalize all the sacrifices and training we are doing. It is a dream that we have been cultivating and nurturing for a long time, which is why we constantly strive. In blue we have on average 4 days collegiate, with 2 training sessions a day, every other week, while with the club 3 times a week “.
The meeting with the sitting
The 30-year-old Roman, who plays a spiker role, started playing sitting volleyball in May 2018 after being summoned to a boarding school in Albano Laziale: “There I got to know my current teammates and see firsthand at what level she can be practiced this sport. After college, I started training with the Roman teams SportAcademy360 and Astrolabio2000 ”. The Italian championship is also on the sporting agenda of this year: “With my team, the SportAcademy360, I am confident in an excellent result. We are training a lot and after the fourth place in the last two championships, we want to aim for the medal. The Champions League is also on the seasonal program: it will certainly be interesting to be able to compete in an international context “.
A life with sport
Born with obstetric paralysis, Flavia “grew up living with my disability, accepting it and adapting my life in a natural way. Surely this reaction has been positively influenced by the people who have been close to me: they have always encouraged me to believe in my potential which I always try to exploit to actively influence events, rather than waiting for them to start independently and therefore being forced to follow them “. Not like the leaves of the wind but like the sailor who holds the rudder of his life tightly in his hand. Speaking of sports, “it has always been an important part of my life. I practiced several as a child: a lot of swimming, basketball, karate, dance, gym. Then in middle school I started playing volleyball and I never left it ”. Always on the hunt for new opportunities to seize and emotions to live: “Take all the opportunities that life puts before you, not giving up anything and constantly insisting on what you want to achieve – he says to those who struggle to get out of their shells -. You cannot change the past, but you can make the present and the future better, you can rediscover a stronger self and take your life back in your hands “.
The Italian works as a software developer and is finishing her master’s degree in energy engineering. In his spare time he enjoys watching movies and TV series, especially action and science fiction. While Tokyo is not, it is not fantasy: it is a splendid reality.
