Genoa – «In the end, the occupation is preventing what was the first request of the occupants to the rector: the resumption in the presence of the lessons. At Disfor it is in fact impossible to sanitize the premises and safety conditions are not respected, provided for by the Dpcm and therefore by law, for work in the presence of University employees, for teachers, students and the occupants themselves “.
Maria Silvia Vaccarezza, the professor of moral philosophy delegated by the rector of the University of Genoa, Federico Delfino, to the relationship with the students, thus speaks of the occupation of the Department of Education, which began last April 19 and is still in progress. Digos investigates, after the rectorate’s denunciation for the invasion of the building. Balbi is also preparing a second complaint, with further hypotheses of crime including damages, private violence, interruption of public service. The police are also examining the position of some teachers who would have granted their studies to the occupants.
After all, there are several professors who officially participate in the employment calendar, included among the speakers of the lessons organized by the collective “Come studio” in the spaces of Corso Podestà which remained open also during the May 1st long weekend. Precisely some videos relating to the most convivial moments of the occupation, on the day of workers’ day, have triggered discordant reactions even among university students. And, perhaps, they overflowed the rector’s jar who, yesterday, invited the students to “go back to studying”.
«The occupation prevents the regular carrying out of didactic activities e the 1st of May was transformed into an open-air nightclub, lots of music and little respect for distances and in the use of masks », write the university students of“ Genoa in Action ”on their Facebook page who have started a collection of signatures to be able to return to the Disfor. “We defend the right to study of the students of Disfor which because of this protest is in fact denied,” says Alessio Zizzi, university referent of Action.
E, even among the administrative employees of Unige, there was controversy after the director of the department, geography professor Nicoletta Varani, blocked the access of all staff to the occupied spaces of Corso Podestà, due to problems related to the sanitation of the spaces.
In this sense, the reports on the conditions of the property that are compiled by the back office in via Balbi for each day of occupation more or less from April 19th are not marginal. There is talk of blacked-out video surveillance systems, broken locks and padlocks replaced, poor hygienic conditions in common areas and classrooms, even dog droppings left in the corridors.
“The day of the occupation I was present at the meeting of two and a half hours between the rector and the collective – says Vaccarezza – and the resumption of lessons was a priority: today, however, the dismantling of the neoliberal system is at the first point which, frankly, does not end with an occupation. As a delegate for relations with students, I also accepted the request for a work table and, among other things, I reminded the students that in the coming weeks the elections for student representatives will take place but, apparently, they are not interested in taking participates in the democratic governance processes of the university ».
“We have sought mediation with the university on various issues starting with the sanitation of the spaces – quiet reply Giacomo Aloi of Come Studio – we would be very happy if the teachers came to give lessons and we would never dream of hindering them. Also with regard to administrative employees, it is not we who are preventing access but it is the management of the department that has prohibited entry. As for the point on the fight against the neoliberal system, it has always been at the forefront of our demands. This is not how they propose that we want to go back to university. And we were also denied to participate in an ordinary council of the department in which we wanted to represent our requests ».
«First of all, as a trainer, I ask that the boys return to being students and no longer squatters of spaces that must be public and usable for everyone to study and must remain closed at night, “he declared yesterday the rector Delfino, shortly after having formalized in the Region the intention to resume the exams and graduation in presence starting from the month of June. And to continue the lessons in mixed teaching as today even in the case of a passage of Liguria – not foreseen by the data – in the orange zone. «As an institution we hold in great consideration the requests of the students who, I believe, at this point, have been sufficiently represented with the occupation that with dialogue and confrontation we hope that it will run out. But we also see damage and inadequate management of buildings, in this sense the university has filed the complaints necessary for the protection of the institution “.
The rector discussed the rules for bring back degrees in the classroom “It being understood that all students will continue to have the opportunity to take the exams and discuss the thesis electronically if they do not want to move or cannot risk doing it in person”, explains Delfino.
Two for each candidate will be admitted to the summer graduation sessions, so a detailed sanitation plan is also being studied. Which also goes through the cellophane on the PCs used by the candidates to project the accompanying materials for the discussion.
“The opening concerns the master’s degrees – specifies Delfino – as the culmination, even with the family, of a course of study and an important moment in life”.
