MOSCOW, 03 MAY – Russia has recorded more than 460,000 excess deaths in the first 12 months of the coronavirus pandemic. The Moscow Times highlights this on the basis of an analysis of official statistics published by the federal agency Rosstat (Russian Istat). Excess mortality is calculated taking into account the average of deaths in the previous five years and is seen by demographers as the most reliable indicator for identifying the real figure in terms of human lives during the epidemic. The latest available bulletin, on the other hand, reports 111,198 official deaths since the beginning of the counts, marking a strong difference between the two figures. (HANDLE).
