The Biological and Reagent Laboratories of Mexico (Birmex) and the National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt), signed a Collaboration agreement with the aim of implementing strategies that strengthen scientific research and National Production from biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, serums and reagents, in order to guarantee their supply and thus consolidate the country’s self-sufficiency in this area.
The CEO of Birmex, Pedro Zenteno Santaella, noted that the signing of this agreement demonstrates how the State, through its institutions, joins efforts to consolidate the actions that allow the development of the necessary activities to promote the production of serums, biopharmaceuticals, vaccines and reagents that allow the country to “regain national sovereignty , guaranteeing respect for article 4. constitution that enshrines the Human Right to Health ”.
The Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer affirmed that it is time to transform and in this task it is essential to coordinate, direct, evaluate and control the actions for the investigation, elaboration, purchase, import, manufacture, mixing, transport and distribution of biological products and reagents. to prevent, diagnose and cure diseases.

In turn, Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Health Promotion and Prevention assured that Birmex supplies the public market with vaccines, biologicals and reagents. “It is important to have a public company that allows strengthening the orientation of institutional health programs related to strategic supplies, such as vaccines, antivenoms and other products that meet the needs of the population.”
The general director of Conacyt, María Elena Álvarez-Buylla Roces, celebrated the signing of the Birmex-Conacyt agreement as memorable because it means a step forward towards the recovery of the State in health matters, contributing to the rebirth of Birmex and, with this, with the advance towards self-sufficiency in biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, serums and reagents.
“This great scientific force is joined by the solidarity companies of the scientific and technological base sector: The facts speak for themselves. The virtuous articulation of all this great national, public and private scientific force, has made it possible to successfully design and produce biomedical technology, such as mechanical ventilators or the development of promising vaccine projects against Covid-19, such as ´Patria´ “.
In his message, the general director of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, pointed out that the signing of the agreement between the Ministry of Health, Conacyt and Birmex is an institutional effort that seeks for the Mexican State to assume the role in the public production of biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, sera and reagents.
“One of the priorities of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is that sovereignty returns to the country and to make it a reality what is embodied in our Constitution is that health never again be a privilege and is the right that we all dream of,” he said .
