– CAPE TOWN, APR 19 – Flames advance along South Africa’s Table Mountain and into central Cape Town after destroying university buildings, as firefighters battle strong winds to control the blaze and residents come evacuated. The fire broke out yesterday morning on the slopes of the mountain, reaching the University of Cape Town (Uct) and destroying buildings and part of a library that houses a unique collection of archives, with hundreds of students forced to flee. The flames have been largely contained today, but firefighters are still fighting for control. Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato said efforts are currently concentrated in the Vredehoek neighborhood, with residents evacuated “as a precaution”. “Strong winds are putting pressure on fire brigade personnel moving in the direction of the flames,” Plato told reporters. Support firefighting aircraft cannot take off due to the wind. The cause of the fire is being investigated and a suspect was arrested overnight, JP Smith, the city’s chief security officer, said.
