UEFA has not stopped working. The European football association, in addition to responding with one statement after another to the announcement of the Super League, today presented the new Champions League format. A new format that will begin in the 2024/25 season and that increases the number of teams from 32 to 36. The competition will also add Thursday as match day to the current Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Ceferin, in the official statement issued by UEFA, assures that “This evolved format will continue to keep alive any team in Europe’s dream of participating in the UEFA Champions League thanks to the results obtained on the field of play, and it will allow the viability, prosperity and long-term growth of all the members of European football, not just a miniscule group selected by itself. ”
This is how the new Champions League format will be structured
The increase from 32 to 36 places, Obviously, it results in that four new teams will qualify for the Champions League. One of the additional places will be assigned tol third team in Ligue 1. Another will be for a league champion through the so-called ‘Route of the Champions’. By UEFA coefficient, everything indicates that the lucky one will be the Turkish league winner.
The other two remaining places will be designated to the two clubs with the best coefficient In the last five years they have not managed to qualify for the Champions League, but they have qualified for the previous one or the other two UEFA competitions (Europa League and Conference League). Let’s take an example to understand it better through the Premier League. Liverpool (sixth) or Chelsea (fifth) would be guaranteed a pass by occupying places in the Europa League and Conference League, although they are not among the top four. Arsenal (ninth) would be left out.
UEFA has added four participants to the competition, with 36 teams competing for the European title. The increase has also led to a change in format as we know it.
The new Champions League eliminates the group stage. Now there will be a league phase and the teams will play a minimum of 10 matches against 10 different rivals. Five matches will be at home and five away. Home and away matches will not be against the same team. Previously, in the group stage, clubs played six games against three teams.
The top eight from each league will qualify for the finals. Teams that finish ranked between ninth and twenty-fourth place will compete in a two-legged play-off to qualify for the second round. The eight winners of this play-off will join the qualifiers to play the round of 16.
UEFA, in addition to the Champions League, will continue with the Europa League and will start the new competition, the Conference League. However, it eliminates the passage from the Champions League to the Europa League. The end of the group stage also forgets the third place that gives access to the Europa League. There will be no second chances in another competition.
Another consequence derived from the increase in matches is the day the Champions League will be played. UEFA will eliminate the only Thursdays from the Europa League. As of 2024, The Champions League will also be played on the fourth day of the week.
