One more time keeping his goal clean and then Jay Gorter establishes his name in the history books of professional football. The Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper has already managed to keep the zero in 22 games this season and next Sunday, when the Deventenaren play against De Graafschap at De Vijverberg, he can match the 50-year-old all-time record of the late Tonny van Leeuwen.
Van Leeuwen, who was already killed in a fatal car accident at the age of 28, strung together the ‘clean sheets’ in the 1970/1971 season. In the shirt of the Groningen GVAV, the final post was unable to score a goal in no fewer than 23 league matches.
Tonny van Leeuwen was given a grandstand named after himself in both the Oosterpark stadium and the Euroborg and has gained hero status in Groningen over the years, Jay Gorter also knows. “Of course I have read things and visited him recently. I hear that it is a great legend, with a statue.”
I already have some wounds on the arm
The 20-year-old Gorter impresses under the bar at Go Ahead and his name will now appear on many premier division scouts’ notepads. He never thought possible that he was able to do this in his first season. “Sometimes I am also surprised myself. It is difficult to think about it. Whether I sometimes have to pinch myself to see if I am not dreaming? I already have some wounds on my arm”, winks he.
Gorter is on the eve of Go Ahead Eagles to equal the record and he will have the opportunity to do so in the remaining six games of the season. Starting next Sunday in the top match against De Graafschap. “Normally you always have a team goal and that is of course much more important. Only now that this record is getting so close, it is starting to become important,” said the talented goalie.

With his 22 ‘clean sheets’ in one season, Jay Gorter is also making global progress. In the global standings for the 2020/2021 season, Gorter is currently second, behind goalkeeper Joao Ricarco of the Brazilian Chapecoense. The leader has kept the zero 24 times in 38 games so far.
