The market for PCs in Mexico is growing. Information of Intel points out that this 2021, around 4.8 million units of the different models and brands of personal computers.
This amount will consolidate the upward trend in this sector, since 4.4 million of these equipment were sold in 2020 and, in 2019, 3.8 million units were purchased. Of the universe of 4.8 million machines that are expected to be sold this year, it is estimated that the laptops O notebooks (portable computers) represent 3.7 million units and the desktops (desktop computers) sold are about 1.1 million computers.
“With these numbers, Mexico gets into the Top Ten of countries with the most sales of PCs worldwide,” said Héctor Barillas, director of Retail at Intel Mexico.
The manager added that the situation derived from the pandemic gave a boost to the sector. “In the retail area, which is what I focus on, there was spectacular growth. In fact, August 2020 was the best month in the historical numbers for which we have data at Intel: we sold more than 300 thousand units in a single month ”.
“The Covid-19 brought an explosion in sales due to the need to have more computer equipment for remote education y twork from home ”. In addition to this situation, Barillas said, was added the fact that previously there was one computer equipment per household in the country.
“Mexico is one of the nations with the lowest penetration of computer equipment in Latin America. According to the latest INEGI data, Mexico has a 37.6% penetration of computer equipment, which means that 37.6 of every 100 households have a computer equipment. If we review the same data from INEGI but, now on the penetration of internet, we see that it is at 52.1%. The above indicates that there are 52.1% of households that have internet access and only 37.6% of them have a computer equipment. That gap is in the homes that connect to the network through a smartphone ”.

They anticipate growth in sales
This 2021 represents an opportunity for Intel to increase its sales since, “there is another factor called density. It refers to having more computers within the same household, because each time a dedicated device for the daughter, for the wife … Today each member of the household needs their own equipment, this will increase the size of the market in Mexico. Then important opportunities come for the next few years, ”said Barillas.
Another aspect that will be relevant this year, he explains Intel, will be the equipment replacement Because many people, in the confinement of 2020, took out the computer that they had stored for five or six years, dusted it off and started using it to ‘get out of trouble’. However, these Internet users have already realized that their equipment is slow and obsolete and will seek to acquire modern machines that respond to the connectivity needs that we have today.
“Then, there is a replacement issue and, precisely the eleventh generation of Intel processors It covers these types of needs with products that have a better performance and that meet the expectations of consumers who are looking for equipment that meets more needs than just being connected to the Internet ”, concluded Barillas.
In this area, Ricardo Chaparro, a specialist at Intel Mexico, said that this new generation of processors represents the most relevant performance leap in recent years.
He commented that there are many features, such as the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), what make the laptops of the different brands that use these Intel chips are more efficient and powerful. He emphasized that HE of processors record people’s usage patterns to optimize the response of the most used applications and programs, just to mention one example.
“If we talk about software and productivity apps like Microsoft Office -which is used throughout the world-, if we compare ourselves with our competitors, we can say that today we have 20% greater productivity and speed (…) In content creation we have up to three times greater speed in processes compared to our competition ”, concluded Chaparro.
