Dr. ir. Rivas also received the public award for his needleless injection. The prize would certainly be won by an overijsselaar, because the two other nominees also come from Overijssel.
the jury was struck by his inspiration. ‘He is enormously inspiring and has a great deal of expertise in specific subjects, but also looks at the breadth. He explicitly makes himself and his knowledge available openly and uses his entrepreneurship to actively pass on his knowledge. But above all, he wants to be an independent scientist who leads motivated professionals to challenging research at the intersection of physics and biomedical science ‘.
Afraid of needles
One in five Dutch people appears to be afraid of needles. A research team led by Cuban Dr. Ir. David Fernandez Rivas has found a solution for injecting without a needle. The device with which it works looks seemingly simple, but the theory behind it is a bit more complicated.
Simply explained, the device heats up the liquid with a laser, creating a vapor bubble that ejects the rest of the liquid in tiny droplets. At a speed of 300 kilometers per hour, the droplets of medicine liquid are fired and pass right through the surface of the skin. The only thing that is felt is a mosquito bite.
