A Curaçao politician, entrepreneur and radio host, Almier Godett, was shot dead in Willemstad on Sunday while trying to calm a family dispute. Local media such as Extra report this. The shooting incident took place in the Juan Domingo neighborhood.
The suspect has been arrested in the neighboring district of Mahuma. Shots were also reported to have been fired during the arrest.
38-year-old Godett was number four on the list of the party Trabou pa Kòrsou (Work for Curaçao – abbreviated TPK) in the upcoming State elections. He was the cousin of Anthony Godett, the nationalist former party leader of Frente Obrero Liberashon 30 di May (FOL) who has also been convicted of corruption. Former Prime Minister Mirna Godett (Anthony’s sister) and the late union leader Wilson Godett (their father) are also the Almier Godett family.
The TPK currently has one seat in the States of Curaçao. It is a splinter party led by parliamentarian Rennox Calmes, who split from the PIN party last year, which still has one seat. On March 19, Curaçao may again go to the polls to choose how the 21 parliament seats will be divided. TPK is one of the fifteen parties that are eligible.
