In the US, over 500 thousand deaths from Covid
In the United States, the death toll from Coronavirus has exceeded the half-million mark, as revealed by data from Johns Hopkins University. There have been over 28 million cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with California being the state that has registered the most infections to date: over 3.5 million since Covid also hit America and more than 49 thousand deaths on one population of 39 million inhabitants.
Followed by Texas, the second largest state with 29 million inhabitants and over two million people infected since the beginning of the pandemic, Florida and the state of New York. Meanwhile, the vaccination campaign continues: after starting with health personnel, police, firefighters and workers in contact with the public, the United States has opened to over 65s and from 15 February to pregnant women and those with serious or chronic diseases. To date, nearly 42 million citizens – 12.7 percent – have been vaccinated with the first dose, while 17 million have completed immunization with the second dose.
According to the calculations, at the current rate, it would take eight months to vaccinate 75 percent of the population. At Easter it should reach 20 percent. Yesterday Joe Biden commemorated the victims of the pandemic: the president, during a speech in the National Cathedral in Washington, called the figure of half a million deaths “heartbreaking”.
“We have to resist from becoming insensitive to pain – he said – We have to resist considering the life of others a statistic. We must honor the dead, but it is equally important to take care of those who continue to live, of those who have remained ”. Together with First Lady Jill, Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff, Biden observed a minute of silence in memory of the Coronavirus victims outside the White House, where dozens of candles had been placed.
