Genoa – “Why shouldn’t we be able to check what happens on European soil? Why don’t they let us do 100 meters? Who and what should we not hear? The suspicion is that there are people who do not want us to meet. I have never seen a thing of the kind”. To write it on his Facebook page is the Ligurian MEP Brando Benifei, member of the delegation of European deputies of the Democratic Party on mission between Croatia and Bosnia to visit the refugee camps.
The group was blocked from the late afternoon at the border between the two countries. “We have been blocked by the police – he says in a previous post – which prevented us from continuing with our inspection. We are committed not to cross the border and it is our right to travel the last bit of Croatia, documenting what happens within our borders. However, this was not possible: a dozen agents have in fact formed a human barrier preventing us from proceeding“.

“The police – concludes Benifei via Facebook – probably have something to hide. If we have been treated like this, let alone how migrants potentially seeking asylum could be treated”.
