Genoa – Below, the year-end speech by the president of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti
“Dear friends and dear friends,
what we have just been through is one of the most difficult, weird and unexpected years in the recent history of the world and of our region. For this reason, in closing it, we cannot fail to remember all the people who left us due to the coronavirus and hug their families and those who have lost a love in recent months.
They were difficult times and this night is no exception: we have had to change our habits, sometimes give up our loved ones, many people have suffered financially from the crisis and the measures taken to contain the virus. We have had to make difficult decisions for our community, but I also believe that we have made many right decisions, which have allowed us, in our region, to stem at least in part the devastation brought by an unknown and unexpected virus, and to respond with adequate measures that we had available to the health needs of citizens.
I thank doctors, nurses, health workers, volunteers of public assistance and all those who have done their utmost in our region in recent months. There has not been a Ligurian who has not received the care he needed. Everyone had a chance, a chance, a cure, an assistance and for this we must constantly thank, hour after hour, all the staff who have done their utmost for this result.
Today is New Year’s Eve, when New Year’s resolutions are usually made, also remembering the recent past and treasuring it. Today we have a glimmer of hope thanks to the vaccine, which we started distributing, already a few days ago, immediately after Christmas, to our health professionals and RSA guests. In the next few hours, the mass vaccination campaign that our healthcare is organizing in the area will intensify and which will lead us within a few months, we hope, to secure at least the most sensitive part of our population such as our parents, the our grandparents and the operators who work on the front line in contact with the virus. The goal is to stem any possible return of the crisis and thus be able to start building the future of our region again. We are already working on this and, indeed, we have never stopped, even in the darkest hours, to plan and plan for the future, because it is precisely in difficult moments that we need to bring out the greatest individual and collective resources, trying to treasure also bad experiences, which we are still living.
This was a year that also experienced moments of great hope, because many years seem to have passed but in reality only a few months have passed since that splendid day in August in which we inaugurated the new Genoa – San Giorgio bridge. It was a miracle of public administration, technology, design, a bridge that brings together the best of what our region, and therefore our country, knows how to give: a great architect and his pen, companies capable of realizing what has rarely been achieved in this country in such a short time, which has been able to put together the work of the national government, the regional government and the mayor of Genoa who was also the commissioner for reconstruction, responsible for much of the effort. We have demonstrated the ability of a city not to bow to a similar tragedy but to act and react with that pride that will make Genoa and Liguria a different reality and community in the coming months, as soon as Covid has given up and we we can all work together again for the future.
We also hope that this 2021 will be the year in which not only the 43 victims of the Morandi bridge find peace, thanks to justice, but the year in which we will know why that bridge collapsed, what carelessness, what inertia, what wrong behavior, culpable or malicious, they have produced this gigantic mourning because this is the real wound, the rift in the conscience of an entire nation. And we also hope that from all this, as with the Covid emergency, the whole country can learn something and treasure it. When we talk about the Genoa model, we do not do it out of pride or vainglory, we do it because it is a goal that the entire Italian society must aim at, that is to be able to fill that infrastructural gap, that gap that separates us from the rest of Europe and which often renders our efforts unproductive.
Today we are working on a season of great investments: we hope that the Recovery plan, that plan for resilience and restart, will bring large allocations of funds to our region as soon as possible for works such as the western railway, the Porto dam. of Genoa and many others, essential for giving work, competitiveness and thinking about the future of our region.
We still have complex moments ahead, but also many hopes and above all many possibilities to start again even faster than we were when we stopped due to Covid. It will depend solely on us, on our capacity for commitment, on our foresight and it will obviously also depend on the systems of government, the commitment of the public administration and the attitude of every citizen. A company is not made up solely of the national, regional government and the mayor, but from the union of the individual efforts of many people who have lived through this difficult moment and have the desire to start again. Our young people, our entrepreneurs, the world of commerce, crafts and agriculture, all the active forces of the nation need a strong signal from politics to have a different country, a project we work on in this region incessantly for five years and we will not stop doing it for the next five. In this New Year the squares of our country are not full, there will be no great fireworks displays, there will not be that social rite of collective catharsis in which you find yourself hugging in the streets to promise yourself a better future and forget the worst of the past. This year we do it in the living room of our homes, with few family members, we do it according to the rules that we have sometimes criticized but that we are certainly all obliged to respect, because the ethics of a better country for the future also start from respecting the rules. . We will be no less close than we were when we were all in our squares, we do it in the common awareness that this will truly be a turning point: once Covid has been beaten, our country, our region, they will know how to start again. I believe that everyone’s desire tonight is to unite the best intentions, the best efforts, to treasure the sacrifice of so many to look to 2021 as a year full of hope, of goals that we can all reach together, as we have already demonstrated in the our region, and a better future for children and grandchildren, which does not make the sacrifice of those parents and grandparents who unfortunately no longer exist in vain. I wish you a 2021 full of satisfactions, in the awareness that those satisfactions will come thanks to the commitment of all of us, if we know how to take on a share of sacrifices and courage that will allow us to look the future in the eye and build it together.
Happy 2021, Liguria “.
