Joe Biden took another major step in his democratic opening of the new style of government in the United States. There is no room for the invented, there is no room for the unprepared, the professional and cultural profiles of the new nominees are of the highest level but with a great eye on respect for women and their professionalism, gender identities, the color of skin. Many women to the President’s communication, Hispanics and African Americans in positions of great power and now also a declared homosexual.
Pete Buttigieg will in fact be the next Secretary of Transportation of the new American Administration. The former candidate for the Democratic nomination for the White House, former mayor of South Bend, will thus be the first homosexual declared in a position of the highest public level.
For the young politician, 38, it is the beginning of the government experience in Washington that many Democrats had accused him of not having during the caucuses and primary.
On twitter Biden wrote ‘I designate Pete Secretary of Transport because I believe him ready to face the challenges between work, infrastructure, equity and climate’.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) plays a central role in preparing the necessary infrastructure plan for the nation. It manages hundreds of billions of dollars to finance federal highways and the regulation of aviation and railways.
With the aim of directing America towards clean energy, Biden proposed the installation of, for example, 500,000 charging stations on the country’s highways and federal vehicles running on electricity rather than gasoline or diesel.
The president-elect also announced the mandatory use by passengers of masks in interstate transportation such as airplanes, trains or buses as a measure to curb the infection of Covid-19 in his first 100 days as government leader. An approach always rejected by Donald Trump.
During the Democratic primary, the speech by the unknown mayor of a small Midwestern town was reminiscent of that of Barack Obama.
Buttigieg presented himself as a man of change and hope. It offered the centrist electorate an exciting future ‘We know it is time not only to end the era of Donald Trump, but to launch the new era we know is to come.’
Buttigieg was the surprise of the democratic race. A 37-year-old man who aspired to become the first president of the United States, with little but serious administrative experience, Harvard graduate, polyglot, highly educated, religious, Afghan military veteran and married to a 31-year-old professor.
Because one thing is certain, with the Biden administration there is no room for medium-low professional profiles. With Biden, for now, the nominees are really of great quality. And Republicans are also aware of this.
